As a parent, I’m always prepared for any circumstance. Skinned knee? I’ve got a band-aid. Hungry toddler, I’ve got a purse full of granola bars. Yet, unlike being equipped with fruit snacks, crayons, and wet wipes, educating your family on emergency preparation is bit more challenging. However, it’s crucial that you and your family understand how to prepare.
- Explain “Emergency”
An emergency is any event that is sudden, urgent, or unexpected. Emergencies range from natural disasters, job losses, economic uncertainties, accidents, and even pandemics. Typically, emergencies require some sort of help or relief. All of these situations can cause a need for an “emergency” food supply. Make sure your family understands disaster awareness and exactly what an emergency is.
- Have a Plan
Having extra food and clean water ready when something unexpected happens is just part of the plan. Choose two meeting spots for your family in case you’re unable to get in touch with one another. One should be outside your home, but nearby. The other should be outside your neighborhood in case you can’t get home. Prepare your home with necessary equipment, like fire extinguishers, smoke alarms, first aid kits, emergency supplies, etc. It’s also a good idea to have an emergency “check-in” contact outside of your immediate family.
- Role Play
Practicing what you will do in case of an emergency is just as important as preparing for one. Since children may not fully comprehend the consequences of an emergency situation, practice the plan for each scenario. Instruct your family on where to meet, who to call, and what to do.
Teaching your family about disaster preparedness will help put your mind at ease and think clearly if an emergency does happen. A little preparation can go a long way.
